A/C connections are under pressure. connections screw together with o-rings. the lines are aluminum so do be careful about over tightening.
you should not vent the "freon" (r134a) into the atmosphere, its not good for the environment. Although I do not believe that it is illegal (it is illegal to vent the older r14 into the atmosphere ... your car uses r134a). An alternative to venting it is to take the car to a service center and have the A/C system evacuated. they collect the "freon" and reuse it.
btw I think that the word "freon" technically refers to the refrigerant used in older cars r14.
You can't keep the system sealed while working on it. if the system is open for a prolonged period of time (e.g. 2 days) you should replace the receiver-dryer ... some will say to replace the receiver-dryer ANY time the system is open to the atmosphere.
you might want to invest in a set of A/C gauges for the refill. otherwise you will be just guessing about the amount of r134a to add.
hope this helps. getting to the evap is pain because of the contortions in the passenger foot well. You have replaced the cabin air filter so you already have some idea of the space constraints you will be dealing with.
