If it's a regular 4 cylinder non Aero go with the V6. You don't have to worry about sludge and you get lots more power. V6's also don't have head gasket or head bolt issues like the 4 cylinders do. Many people say that the V6 is much smoother than the 4 cylinder and it does have a much broader power range. I have a 2001 V6 with 165k miles and I don't see what people are talking about the engine being smooth. I would say mine is pretty rough and loud but there's probably an engine mount worn out somewhere. It does have lots of miles on it afterall. If you test drive it make sure you try out the "S" for sport button on top of the shifter. It turns the car into a whole new beast. Just make sure you keep up with timing belts and tensioners.
