There are primary scams, secondary scams, on the side scams, and inadvertant losses.
Lot of web businesses basically don't want you to contact them except through their web form. Many are very legitimate businesses but they hide their identity, location, and contacts anyway. This annoys me and you have to ask do you really want to deal with such a business any way? These are probably just best avoided.
Still unlikely they are simply out to scam you out of your CC number. If they are going to scam you they are far more likely to give you something in return but junk. At least they have gively you a deliverable. The other is outright theft the second a transaction dispute. Much less risk for them.
However, some bad underhanded but apparently on the surface legitmate business do seem to be associated with CC fraud (see some of the electronics retailers on the ratings sites). Hard to know if it is a deliberate objective of the business, bad employee, or system compromise. Of course even the best organizaitons have "leakage". Regardless of reason if it hits you not good.
Every transaction is an exposure. You just never know. Personally misuse of my CC number isn't nearly the worry as outright identity theft where credit is established in one's name. My SS number is the one I am most paranoid about. Still very wise to be careful.
