I don't know why this thread refers to a supposed superior quality of Toyotas, I would argue that Toyota's reputation is a superior reliability.
This engine sludge problem, while a black eye for Toyota, really shouldn't make any SAAB owner feel that this proves that Toyotas aren't typically more reliable than SAABs.
I love my 9-5, enough to buy my daughter one this past summer, but the problems experienced with mine, while under warranty, could not match the typical Toyota ownership.
Remember, sludge can be prevented. What could I have done to prevent my DIC from going out at 20,000 miles, stranding me on the side of the Interstate on Christmas Eve (also took out the catalytic converter)? What could I have done to have prevented my throttle body from needing replacement at 30,000 miles? When was the last time a Toyota needed rotors replaced before 50,000 miles? [disclaimer, mine actually didn't replacing until 70,000, but had big grooves at 10,000]
Have you ever priced SAAB parts? Obscene.
Maybe Toyotas are boring, maybe SAABs are "better", but repair problems and costs, no comparison.
