how far will you drive for service?

Hello all,
I just moved to a new state (MD) and am trying to find a new mechanic for our 00 9-5. Tried the dealer for a recall notice plus an semi-syn. oil change. My favorite way to try out a new place -- give 'em a simple task that's partly paid for by someone else and see if they goof. In this case, all the oil was on the driveway the next morning. Strike One.
Now the car has an intermittent heavy vibration/bucking problem, it's at 50k, plus there's a sheared bolt underneath (roughly where the exhaust originates - one that holds that aluminum cover on). I was considering having the 50k service done even though it doesn't seem like more than an oil change/tire rotation/general look-see, but I just called a nearby indy and was told that the 50k service is $300; plus $98/hr to diagnose the engine problem we're having. Unfortunately it felt like talking to a service writer at the dealer, and not someone who was trying to figure out more details of the problem in advance so as to save some time & $$ in diagnosing. Wasn't even interested in the info I volunteered - so now I have this feeling they'll spend 1.5 hours on the engine and then realize it's a bad tie rod or something!
So my question to you all is, how far will you drive for good service? There appears to be a good place about 1 hour away - but that seems kinda crazy, esp. as we've got two toddlers that need to make the drive with us. On the other hand, I want to a place that will talk intelligently to me. I do some of my own work (brakes/rotors/tires - the easy stuff) and want to know what's going on. Thoughts anyone? tia
