Most new car owners manuals recommended oil and filter changes every 7,500 or 10,000 miles in 'normal driving conditions'. Usually there is a disclaimer in the owners manual that states frequent stop and go driving, high speed driving, excessive idling, excess hot or cold weather, short trips, and basically everything but BUT 20-50 mile open freeway driving constitutes 'severe driving conditions'. 'Severe driving conditions' require oil and filter changes every 3,000 to 5,000 miles.
So the vast majority of drivers fall into the 'severe driving conditions' catagory. I drive 10 miles each way to work in city driving. I personally use Mobil 1 synthetic oil and change my oil and filter every 5,000 miles. Obviously synthetic oil can last for 10,000 miles or more, but given my driving habits I am concerned about fuel contamination of the oil and condensation in the oil crankcase. So I change the oil more frequently beacause of my driving style.
