Ahhh, that's another dilemma. Some folks prefer smaller cars, some like bigger cars. There's really only about 8" difference though the two cars are different classes. The 9-3SS is a European large car, and the 9-5 is a Euro executive class auto. Think 3 series and 5 series, C class and E class.
In the SportCombi I find the 9-5 to be quite a bit more open and airy, the 9-3SS SC pinched in towards the rear. Also the 9-5 rear seat bases fold up allowing the seat backs to fold all the way flat. The 9-3 SC seat backs don't go flat. I also prefer the lower cowel height, lower dash and window sills of the 9-5. And I have always preferred the executive class size.
Up until 2007 the 9-3SS sound systems sucked in comparison to the excellent Harmon Kardon system in the 9-5. The lone exception is the 9-3 SC's with premium package with have an actual subwoofer over the spare tire, but it still isn't as good as the 9-5 H-K sound. And the new Black Tie in the 9-5's is superlative. For 2007's I think the 9-3 line has finally become comparable with Bose sound and it's own version of the Black Tie radio.
I also prefer the big 2.3 turbo four over the V6, just personal preference, it let's me know it's alive at idle. The 9-3's have a much better slap shifter than the 9-5's. To use the 9-5 paddles you must carefully select the manual mode and then you can only paddle. The 9-3's you just slap into the manual gate and then you can paddle or slap the shifter. My shift brain is wired to my arm not my finger tips. But the 9-5 tranny is real sweet just left in sport.
The 9-5s have never had any particular electronic glitches and have had excellent reliability ratings overall. The 9-5 also feels more solid and rattle free than the 9-3 line. I really like the 9-5 sport seats and they come vented too.
There both cool, many folks have both and like both.
