I did this in my 91 9k, not the same car but generally similar engine.

With a 5 speed the vibration increased slightly, but wasn't too bad at idle. With an automatic I suspect it would be more noticable.

Pros: quicker revving (slight but there), better fuel mileage (very, very slight), removal of a potential failure point, possible cost savings vs replacing.

Cons: more vibration, possibly accelerated wear to vibration sensitive components (engine mounts and such).

If you remove it let us know how the 9-5 reacts...
