I love my car, I really do. Lately tho it has been a trial by fire through which my car has had to jump thru hoop after hoop. My Warranty expires in 1500 miles.
After owning this car ('04 Aero SportWagon) for just over three years I've had to replace the IDM three times. I'm currently on my forth IDM and it's holding up very well but while I'm happy that Saab has replaced them without any trouble, I've never been satisfied with the fact that they're only treating the symptom and not addressing the reason for all the (to me anyway) premature failures.
Add to this a strange rumble in my manual transmission (recently replaced under Warranty!) and I'm starting to loose confidence in this vehicle... I've been a Saab driver since '83.
OK, so I get my new transmission and the car drives great, just like new... the shifting is crisp again and no whining noises at highway speeds. I'm a happy camper for one day... the next day and I'm back at the dealer with a rough running engine... it's obviously misfiring, the whole car is shaking.
I was driving on an empty freeway going approx. 95 mph and wanted to test it a bit... up to this point thecar is driving normally... I punch the throttle and no boost... strange, usually I'd be inching toward 110 in no time... I store this unusual occurance in my memory and slow down to 70 or so, hit the cruise control and go on with my trip. When I reach the end of the freeway offramp the car is bucking like crazy... lucky for me the dealer is close so I pull in... the Service Manager is standing in the driveway and they immediately pull the car into a service bay to check it out. This was Friday so I won't know what gives still today.
They've just called me to give me the bad news... might have to replace the engine. The engine now!
Alright, I'm a calm guy so I ask them why? Why, after three years of maintanence above and beyond the specs in the owner's manual, do I have a problem with the engine now? Service writer says first they though tit was simply a bad spark plug... then they measured the resistance on one of the fuel injectors and it was zero, but wait... now all of a sudden there;s no compression n cylinder number one. "Cylinder number one!" I say. "I've had trouble with that cylinder ever since I've had the car... misfires on cylinder number one have been the reason for all the IDM replacements! You guys see a pattern here?" So they pull the head and the valves are all dirty. Not seating properly. They claim they don't know why this is and suggest it could be "fuel related." Hardly. I've used Chevron Premium all the while and Techron every 8K.
They want to resurface the head, I want a new engine. Do I have a case here?
Sorry for the long rant.
