Those cars you are comparing may have more gadgets but likely are not as well made as a 9-5. I see them in every block, unlike a SAAB. If that is what you want, the Japanese cars always have the most bang for the buck.
I personally am interested in a Toyota camry Hybrid, for the mpg and hybrid technology mainly, but it is similar to a Mazda 6. It is modern, feature-laden, quiet and technology rich. But it feels very mass-produced.
Furthermore, when I sit in it all I see is plastic everywhere. When I open the trunk I see painted metal and cheap speakers. The seats are uncomfortable. New owners mention squeeks in the dash. And if it is anything like the Camry sedans I have rented, it will begin to feel loose on the road at 20-30k miles.
On the other hand, my 6 yr old 9-5 still looks good (unique), has a gorgeous leather and walnut interior, no squeeks, runs perfectly at 85K, tracks beautifully at 100+ mph like any proper Euro sedan and will protect my ass if I get hit head-on like I was in my 9000.
It compares more closely with that Bimmer you have, quite frankly.
