The subject is a 2003 Aero wagon with 38K mileage. Timing chain / Balancer chain sounds noisy to me but not quite sure if what I'm hearing is "normal". Plan of attack is as follows:
(1) Pull chain tensioner and Cam cover to check tensioner dimension and chain guide wear (if I can see the later). Sludge check too.
(2) Pull oil pan and clean pickup. Evaluate sludge.
(3) If the above indicates action. Roll-in new chain. Assume AND HOPE teeth of chain sprockets not worn too much and remain serviceable. Priority is to avoid expensive failure of timing chain. Assume balancer chain failure does not have the same catastrophic effect of timing chain failure...
