CAN = Controller Area Network Posted by MI-Roger [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: code reader is probably all that I can afford, bobc ![]() ![]() |
I cut and pasted the following from a code reader sales page. Saab was one of the first manufacturers to adopt this new protocol, so any code reader you intend to use on a newer Saab must be CAN compliant to be of any benefit to the user.
With 2008 almost upon us the non-CAN compliant readers will probably disappear fast. Although they may be deeply discounted to move them off store shelves, so be wary when buying.
"Adopted by the automotive industry in 2003, CAN will serve as a true standard for managing in-vehicle systems, and is already in production at manufacturers including Ford, GM, SAAB and VW. CAN has also been mandated by the EPA to become the only protocol for new car certification by 2008. The existing protocols, each of which has failed to deliver consistency across manufacturers, will be phased out."
