The "Time For Service" message on you SID refers to oil changes and general inspection. It should have also displayed at 50,000 miles as it happens every 10,000 miles. If you didn't see it then, I can only guess the seller performed it at time of sale, reset the warning, and your odometer is off by a whopping 20%! Personally, I change the oil at 5,000 mile intervals.
Saabs require a Major Interval Service at 60,000 mile intervals. This work is easy but time consuming - plan on a full day and $150 in parts & fluids. It is the time component which creates the $1000 cost at a Dealership. Many on-line parts discounters will sell you the entire kit of service parts & fluids as a single item, http://www.thesaabsite.com lists these service kits on their web site.
I strongly recommend replacing the top idler pulley at 60,000 mile intervals too. It is not on Saab's list but it is easy to replace and is known for failure before 120,000 miles - failure of this pulley will leave you stranded on the side of the road with no power steering, no alternator, no A/C, but most importantly no water pump to cool the engine! The additional cost will be around $45 for this small pulley which spins at 2 to 3 times engine speed.
