2.3 litre Head Bolt Issue - Phase II Posted by MI-Roger [Email] ![]() ![]() |
Anyone who replaced their head bolts, and used a non-Saab valve cover gasket, should check their gasket for oil leaks.
I was doing my 190,000 mile service today (in the balmy 27 degree F Michigan weather) which included new spark plugs. I was shocked to see how much oil crud was in the spark plug galley after removing the IDM!
I change plugs every 10,000 miles which corresponds to roughly 4 month intervals. At the last three plug changes I have noticed a little staining on one galley wall where a small amount of oil had weeped past the gasket but never made it all the way down the wall. It had never apeared to increase since my first observation.
Today that same wall was fully stained, the floor of the galley was stained, and a small amount of granular crud was on the galley floor where the leaking oil had burned off leaving this residue. I re-tightened all valve cover screws and will replace this gasket set in the Spring with an OEM part. I have not done PCV v6.0 yet but did check to be sure the bleed port in the PCV nipple that goes to the Throttle Body was open and that all hoses had not yet failed..
I just wanted to give a heads-up to others who may have the same problem and not know it yet. Obviously the aftermarket valve cover gasket set I used loses its resiliency with age.
