Ok, I can only shed some light on part of the story.
You take the rotor off the car, use a grinder with a pad to clean the surface on rotor and wheel hub, part of the cost of the grinding pad is included in the labor cost if he didn't charge extra for that.
You mount the rotor on the lathe and start turning it. The cost of purchasing the lathe (roughly $5000.00 for a new one) is baked into the labor of turning the rotor even if you stand there watching it the whole time. So is the cost of the ceramic cutting bits that needs to be replaced now and then.
Yes, it might be on the high side of labor but all shops have the right to charge what the market can take and if you have been pleased with all other work they have done and that you don't have to come back to have thing corrected time after another, I don't think it is totally out of line.
AND, he allowed you to bring your own pads in which some shops completly refuse to do.
Another thing to think of if you are pleased with their work. If he realize that you go back home, cool off and "poll the internet" if it was a fair deal or not every time, then he might cut you loose and let you find another shop that can help you in a better way?
I wouldn't be too happy if I knew my customer would check with the internet on every job I do to see if I'm fair or not. I know I'm fair but every job have its own twist and turns and we never know the real story behind the story when reading a plea for help from over the internet.
You see, it is always someone else out there that can do it for less. No matter how much you lower your cost. It will always be someone that can undercut that.
Sometimes it is because they have a lower overhead or that they are pleased with making less money than another shop. Sometimes it is because they hire very low skilled mechanics and pay them peanuts instead of real money, and you don't want to end up at those shops.
End of my rant.
Anders
