As posted below, my '01 with 80k miles on it wouldn't restart after being parked for an hour. Troubleshooting revealed a bad fuel pump. Dealer wanted $800 Cdn for the whole assembly (which includes filters, fuel sender, etc.) when all that's needed is the pump which is about $100 Cdn on line. Certainly swapping the whole assy is easier than taking it apart, sourcing, and replacing just the pump, but my time is cheap....

Painful process to remove the old unit. The lock ring (5.5" across) is torqued to 55 ft lbs and is supposed to be removed with a special Saab tool. I used a two jaw gear puller, adjusted to 5.5" OD so the outside of the jaws would just fit in the lock ring notches, then turned it with a pair of crescent wrenches. That sucker was tight....

The old fuel pump assy lifts out of the hole, but it needs a lot of twisting and persuading to get it out. It comes out with about a quart of gas in it, so cover the carpets (I used a plastic-coated paper a crankshaft came wrapped in) and have a container handy to place it in.

I hooked 12v to the assy once it was on the workbench, with no signs of life from the pump, so I took it apart and removed the pump by cutting the hose at the barbed pump connector. Save all the rubber cushions etc surrounding the pump, none of them will be supplied with the new pump.

The pump itself is labelled:

Walbro 4021358
A0S006
349 00 2M1
PAT NO 4500270

This cross references to Walbro PN 5CA3360 that fits a bunch of Saabs (900s, 9000s, and 9-5s) and is available from site sponsors as well as other suppliers.

Strangely, once the pump was removed from the whole assembly it worked again when hooked to 12v... those things develop a ton of pressure with a finger over the output... but it's proven flakey so it certainly isn't going back in.

Once the new pump is delivered, "Installation is the reverse of removal" as they say.

Les
