Put 200+ miles on the car since the job, all appears well. The temperature is looking correct, no CEL, and no apparent leaks.
Yes I believe you probably could replace the thermostat without removing the hose. But if you're going for the sensor as well, it'll have to come off.
I had exactly the same problem as Chris with my 19mm "deep" socket. It wasn't deep enough! Actually it was deep enough for getting the old one off, I sorta jammed it on and smushed the plastic connector part, but for the new one you either need a deeper one, or a 19mm combo wrench. The trick is, your standard 19mm combo wrench is fairly long, and this leads to the problem of not having anywhere to maneuver it. Think you can get a short 19mm wrench at Sears?
