transmission cooler banjo bolts - easy fix with pics Posted by bobc [Email] (#473) [Profile/Gallery] (more from bobc) on Mon, 26 Feb 2007 23:16:07 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
A few of us have noticed a slight fluid leak at the front of the car, on the passenger side. The leak is clearly further forward than the engine itself, roughly under the radiator. it usually smears all over the plastic lower cover.
by the time the drip is apparent, the oil is so gunked up it looks like engine oil. It is actually transmission fluid, due to loose transmission cooler banjo bolts. These are the bolts that join the transmission lines to the transmission cooler in the radiator.
apparently these were not tightened properly at the factory and over time tend to "weep" transmission fluid.
The fix is easy of course: tighten the bolts. the hard part is finding the bolts, and then getting a wrench on them. Here is how I did it. total time ~20 minutes
I've included picture at the link below, I wish they were better but I think y'all can get the idea. (hey kids, if you are reading: I could use a new camera, and my birthday is coming up!)
tools:
- flat head screwdriver (to remove the hose clamps)
- 19mm box end wrench
- 19mm deep socket & ratchet.
- unhook the PS line from its bracket and bungee it out of the way. you are going to need all the room you can get, and yes this extra 1/2 inch will help)
- disconnect the airmass meter from the intake at the left side (looking at it). disconnect it at its left side to give you slightly more room than if you disconnect it from its right side.
- disconnect the flexible intake at the right side and move the whole assembly out of the way. (there is plenty of slack in the wiring to the AMM so no need to disconnect it)
- now look down the radiator, along the left edge of the fan. fiddle around and you will see the top banjo bolt easily. it is large (19mm) and copper-looking. use a 19mm box end to snug it up. (mine was a tad loose, but not leaking)
- now look down from there, you will see the lower rad hose ... it is most likely blocking your view of the lower banjo bolt. To further complicate matters, the lower bolt is probably covered in oil/grease/gunk and it wont have the bright copper look to it. look hard, feel around, wiggle the rad hose ... you will see it. you can *almost* see it in my pics.
- to tighten it use the ratchet and a 19mm deep socket.
- with the socket attached to the ratchet, you can reach around the rad hose and the engage the bolt. its tricky to snake it around the serp belt, rad hose and all the other crap down there. the deep socket allows the handle of the ratchet to clear the rad hose, so that the socket is on the bolt and the ratchet handle can move.
You can snug up that bolt with a few clicks of the ratchet.
Some have recommended using a gear-wrench for that lower bolt. I am sure that would work too, but I don't have one (hey kids if you are reading: remember my birthday is coming!)
- once tight put the PS hose back in its bracket.
- re-attach the AMM.
- done.
tighten your tranny cooler bolts
