baking soda, vaseline

make a water paste of household baking soda and apply it with a toothbrush to the terminal and around the top of the battery. - the bubbling you see is gas released as the acid is neutralized. Wash with some clean water, dry, the apply a liberal amount of vasline all over the terminal.
Actually, if you want to do it right, get a terminal puller (maybe $5 in an auto store) loosen the bolt, pull the terminal, do the NaCO3 mush thing and wash, vaseline the terminal, put back the cable so that it squishes out the vaseline, swivel it back and forth to seat it properly and tighten (not to hard, as those bolts will twist right off.
Any kind of imperfect connection sets off galvanic action, which eats up the clamp and bolt and generates white stuff. If you really have a leak, the bubbling won't stop after you wash it, as you add more paste. Any leaking acid will jazz up that bicarbonate right away, and you'll see it.
Don't try to free up a battery terminal without the puller unless it loosens really easily, as you'll break the post and ruin it.
