It could well be that the change really is that simple. Adding length to the antenna, up to a quarter wavelength if the receiver is grounded at its mount, will increase the signal strength that the receiver sees. Something 1/2 wavelength needs no ground. In theory, you could go longer but the pattern would begin to get a little strange past 1/2 wave and would not provide any benefit.
I am not certain what frequency range these remotes work on but will assume somewhere in low-band VHF (does anyone know more precisely than this?).
You are in no danger of blowing anything up due to the antenna mod itself-- though I would caution you to follow normal ESD precautions while working on the electronics(wear a grounded wrist strap while working on the electronics and make sure that your soldering iron is also grounded).
