It is ok to start using synth. regardless of the oil your Aero was fed in the past. I use M1 0w40, but there are a lot of opinions on this. Search the board, pick one and stick with it.
I can't imagine why a dealer would not release the car's repair history. You want to see the IRIS report. The IRIS report will detail all of the warranty work that was done. You could press him for it, or you can get an it from another more cooperative dealer, or some helpful folks on this board.
I recommend that you get the IRIS report, a CARFAX report and check for sludge just to get off on the right foot.
a puff of smoke on startup is often the first signs of leaky turbo seals. common failure at that mileage on the LPT but rare on the Aeros.
