in my case a heater hose had a ~1 inch split. on the picture, it was #4 right where the hose necks down to a smaller smaller diameter.
No leaks at all during idle. But on the road it would spew. It turned out to be a split in the hose ... as the RPMs went up and the flow and pressure in that hose rose, the split would open up.
the irony was that it would open and spray coolant on the bypass valve ... so I was convinced that it was the bypass valve that was leaking!
yea there is quite a tangle of heater hoses and such there. but if you have a similar case, you can find the leak by squeezing each of the hoses while the car is idling and up to temp. When you squeeze it the split will reveal itself.
that said I think mine was a pretty rare case.
I hate to say it, but you should also consider a head gasket leak. Any white smoke out the tailpipe? Have you replaced the head bolts? on your car (as on mine) they were faulty/loose from the factory.
