I agree with almost everything you said, except when you mentioned that the rebate is necessary to address the bad resale values. Its because of the rebates that are consistantly available with Saabs, anything from $3k to $5, that Saabs have had the bad resale values. As soon as you drive off this $40K car off the lot, it's worth $33K. In 1,2,3 years or whenever you decide to sell it, the "market" knows that you had paid $33K for it and will depreciate it off that price. If one were to calculate the depreciation from the actual cost, not sticker, of the car to the point of resale, the depreciation isn't that bad. But when calculated from the sticker, its horrible.
Until Saab can sell its cars for whatever the sticker is or somewhere very close,(BMW, Acura, Lexus), it will always suffer from bad depreciation.
