if it is belt whine or squeal it is due to slight misalignment of the belt on the pulleys.
best thing to do is to check all of the idler pulleys (they are known to fail) and check the tensioner.
to check the pulleys, slacken the belt and lock the tensioner in the slack position with a 4mm hex. (see the link) then spin each of the idlers ... listen for noise and roughness. feel for any "in and out" looseness.
I don't know a good way to check the tensioner, except to just look at it while the engine is running ... if it bounces too much or if it is slightly cocked in one direction replace it. I would not let my tensioner go past 120k.
another possibility though less likely is the water pump bearing. as it fails, the pulley on the water pump tends to "tilt" out a bit.
