Sounds strange, but that is why you will find a circular cut-out in the carpeting beneath the back seat.
Search on this board for postings regarding fuel leaks/fuel pumps/fuel smells, etc. There have been a few in the last month or so. A common failure point seems to be the nylon fuel line connectors which clip into the fuel pump assembly. They harden with age, break a securing clip, then leak fuel. New line-end connectors and an additional metal anchoring bracket are service parts available from the Dealer.
I haven't done this repair on my car but it has me concerned. I plan to pro-actively install the metal bracket to relieve stress on the connectors before they fail.
