What they are talking about is the engine oil cooler that is submerged into the coolant chamber of the engine block and has a aluminum cover plate on top.
The silicon sealant from factory sometimes goes bad and it allows coolant to sneak by between the cast iron engine block and aluminum cover.
The only way to fix it is to remove all intake manifolds and fuel injection rails to get down in between the cylinder banks.
The most difficult part of this job is to loosen the two oil cooler pipes that are attached to engine block and the oil cooler.
After that it is a matter of cleaning all surfaces very good and apply a new layer of silicon, o-rings and sealing washers.
I use a high quality red silicon from Nissan instead of the grey one that GM is selling.
If they are also planning on replacing the engine oil cooler and not just resealing it. The price of the cooler itself is some $500.00 in parts alone.
It is a chance that the oil cooler start to leak (it has happened before) so that's probably why the dealer is taking the safe road and wants to replace it instead of just resealing it.
I just resealed a low mileage 2002 V6 the other day and replaced the lower radiator hose housing and it came up to about $500.00.
