I use a floor jack. I put a piece of plywood between the oil pan and the jack. jack gently until I see the engine just start to move.
the jack will support the engine, and the plywood will distribute the forces and provide a bit of cushion so you don't dent the pan. I've not used a wedge but I suppose that could work as well.
once the engine is supported, remove the mount.
btw using the jack technique helps when re-installing the mount as well. you often have to adjust the engine up or down a bit to get the bolts in.
