First, when snow tires get down to 2/32" they no longer function as snow tires. The bite of snow tires in the snow is their cleat-like function in the snow....which requires a healthy amount of tread. Somewhere below 50% this quality is greatly diminished. I've generally replaced snow tires when they get down to 4 or 5 32nds.
Also, any tire with only 2/32nds will tend to hydroplane easily.
I know that it can get expensive replacing snow tires when half of the tread still remains; however, below that you end up with snow tires that behave like racing slicks in the snow....slick as.....
