It is not so amazing. The test is the same and the base engine size is the same. The acceleration rate for the EPA test is quite sedate and does not use all the power the engine can make. I would expect the same engine with different maximum power levels to have about the same economy at low power levels. The only exception would be if the cam timing was changed by much.
I love my 2000 lpt. I get 20+ around town and 30+ on the road. I even get 16 mpg towing the worlds most un-aerodynamic trailer. My pickup used to get 11mpg towing.
The worst thing I found for mileage is short trips. This engine absolutly sucks the gas when it is warming up. Moral --> Plan your trips.
