not really - you can drain the oil and root around with a piece of wire to see if you dig out any sludge or 'coffee grounds', or pull the valve cover and look inside to get some indication.
If the oil pressure light goes out promptly when started and doesn't flicker back on, the engine doesn't make loud whining (grinding bearings with no oil pressure) noise at startup, and no clattery valvetrain noises, then it's probably OK *today*. I would check it promptly. The sludge itself isn't really the problem (you can clean that out) but sudden blocked oil passages=low oil pressure=damaged bearings etc = new engine time.
I pulled the valve cover on mine last year when the sludge panic was at its height. It looked good so I have an oil pan drop on the to-do list but no panic for it.
If he's got 130k miles of regular oil changes with full synthetic you're probably OK too - but that's a lot to hope for!
