Weird stall, no restart - looking for ideas! Posted by CrNiFe [Email] (#408) [Profile/Gallery] (more from CrNiFe) on Fri, 13 Apr 2007 10:04:51 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
My MY 99 9-5 SW 2.3lpt, 125000km, stalled in a weird way on Wednesday morning, here in Toronto.
Started okay in the driveway. Drove 400 m, stopped at a long traffic light, for about two minutes. Turned left onto eastbound Sheppard, accelerated well to 60 km/h, moved into the curb lane. Turned right onto southbound Bayview, on a green arrow light, slowing to 25 km/h, moved to the center lane. Came up behind a white car with dealer plates making an illegal lane change, halfway to the light at the interchange in the center lane (becomes curb lane at the traffic lights). Applied the brakes moderately.
Heard the warning chime, saw a dashboard full of lights (Triangle, Check Engine Check Gearbox, oil pressure light, etc).
Recognized it as a stall. Turned on Hazard Flashers.
Placed the gear selector in neutral, tried to restart as I went down the hill through the traffic lights (green).
Pulled over into the right lane (for 401E ramp) on west side of Bayview.
Would not restart, first few times.
Waited thirty seconds, moved the lever to P position. Started, but then immediately stalled, no more than five seconds, enough to extinguish dash lights.
Continued to try starting the vehicle, but I was in a very dangerous position on roadway (under a bridge), urgently needed to get away – hazard to others. (found some construction cones to block the lane, called CAA, police etc., but it still wasn't a place to mess around under the hood)
Dashboard lights would come on, Check OK signal on the SID.
Became more and more difficult to turn over, tried to restart about ten times in three minutes. Battery seemed to get weaker and weaker.
Caught one more time, died.
Dash lights flickered when trying to start, then only clicks (battery dying).
Waited twenty minutes, tried again, but now no battery power. No smell of burning under the hood; all drive belts intact.
Almost an hour later, the tow truck driver had a hard time with the Gear Selector Lever, needed to use a key end to press the release to move it to Neutral. Glad I remembered the trick, but I forgot where to put the front tow bar (never had to use it before!), and didn't have my manual.
CPS changed out, 16 months ago for new, old one is a spare in cargo area.
DIC changed about 18 months ago, for new, old one is a spare in cargo area.
Battery is three years old, Feb 2004.
Had two minor no starts in the past three years, with no recurrence.
At the dealership:
Foreman brought the car in Thursday morning, used a battery pack, engine started right up.
About ten minutes later, noticed that it had stalled, with no lights on the dash.
No codes thrown.
Happened one more time again.
He has checked all harnesses, DIC, fuel pump, CPS (CKP), and everything else he can think of, so now we are open to suggestions. About a half of tank of gas available.
When I visited this morning, we started it up, no problems or noises. It was still running when I left.
Looking for any ideas on something electrical or fuel system related that would cause the stall. Vacuum boost on the brakes? Fuel canister, for vapour recovery? Gas cap?
Regards from Toronto,
CrNiFe
