The more aggressive throttle pedal is the second characteristic of the sport mode. The other is delayed shift points and much quicker downshifts on part throttle, much less throttle required.
Yes that's the winter mode, start in 3rd in M.
You must have a light foot if the tranny hunts in sport. I have a heavy foot and I've never felt a hunt. The sport mode proves very satisfying to even die hard manual fans, with heavy foot(s?).
One note is that the sport mode in Saabs doesn't prevent the full lock up and upshift into overdrive so no fuel economy is sacraficed for highway cruising. That's not true of other brands.
