Hi everyone,

Since no one was able to answer my quest for a replacement for the OEM shifter knob, I ordered a 9-3 (2002 and less) leather knob, because it is half the price of the 9-5's, (69 $CDN instead of 135 $CDN), and it looks better. There is even the plastic sift pattern included, so don't order it separately as I did.

The result is very nice, even if the 9-3's knob is smaller in size. It fits beautifully, and installation will take you a big 5 minutes...

Now, for a picture, click here:

Part number is 53 33 349, or for us canadians, # 30588752.

For removal/installation, a few tips:
- Saab recommend to remove the assembly from the car, but I did it in situ.

- the knob itself is only press-fitted to the shaft: you can pull up strongly enough, or you can use a big wrench wrapped with a towel, placed under the knob and tap on the wrench upwards with a mallet. Saab recommend method #2, but I did method #1. If you succeed, you'll have the knob, the black plastic lock sleeve and the gaiter all in you hand.

- the plastic lock sleeve under the knob is attached to the knob itself via 3 little fingers placed at 1, 4 and 5. Use a little flat screwdriver to depress each of them in sequence, and remove the knob from the sleeve.

- Align the new knob #4 with the R on the sleeve, and attach the sleeve to the underside of the knob

- Press firmly on the knob to slide it on the shaft, and then hit it with the palm of your hand until the lock device prevent the lever to reach the reverse gear, as usual. I had to hit it quite a few times, not too hard as I didn't want to break the plastic bits that supports the shaft in the assembly. Saab recommends that the lock sleeve "leg" sits flush with the reverse stop when at rest.

That's it, it is a lot easier then it reads, believe me.

Now, at least I have a nice looking shifter knob, after all that time I $?"&&!! about the old worn one...
