It's not that the 2-1 causes a clunk. As the mileage goes up more shifts = more clutch wear. The electronics in the trans controller adjusts the hydraulic pressures ever so slightly as time goes on. There comes a point where the trans fluid starts to break down and not be able to provide the viscosity it once did (very much like engine oil). Here's where things get a bit funny, because the controller can get to a point where it is trying to compensate for more than it can, the hydraulic pressures get high and the viscosity of the oil is low allowing the clutches to 'grab' instead of 'coast to the same rotational speed'.
One more thing I forgot to mention: while dealing with the fluid change, disconnect the battery so that the controllers will 'forget' their prior shift settings and start from scratch with the new fluid.
Good luck!
