The ECU will adjust boost & timing to keep the engine just on the edge of pinging (that little 'crackle' under acceleration - you should never hear it at steady speed unless you're hill climbing).
Continual serious pinging is a cause for concern.
My '01 LPT will crackle more on 87 so I use 89 as soon as the weather warms up. Warm, dry weather and using airconditioning will all cause more crackling.
You could try a tank of ($$$) octane boost but this is not a long term solution.
My '01 has 80k miles on it, looks like new in & out, and I have no doubt it will last at least another five years.
