Before you undertake replacing the heater control valve (which is a likely culprit, but not the easiest thing in the world to replace), you might consider replacing the pressure cap on the coolant reservoir. I had some coolant loss a while back that was caused by the cap failing to properly maintain pressure in the system.
For a quick check, when the car is at operating temperature, squeeze the upper rad hose (carefully, it's hot) - if it isn't good and firm, your system is not holding pressure.
