1999 9-5 wagon engine replace at 90,000 miles, help!

We purchased our 1999 Saab 9-5 last summer with apx. 78,000 miles from a Saab wholesaler. It had one previous owner before that and appeared to be well maintained. Since we have had it, we had to have the idler and drive belt replaced. Now just weeks later after driving it I noticed it was driving sluggish and then making unusual noises, plus there was some smoke from the exhaust (no check engine light). We took it into a Saab mechanic and he is now telling us that the "pistons are broken from pre-detonation" (his words) and we need a new engine. He says this is a common 9-5 problem and results from not using premium gas. He quoted us $3,000 for a rebuilt engine, or $6,000 for a new engine.
So, my questions are:
-is this the same as the sludge problem I have read about in other posts?
-is there any chance of warrenty coverage or any recall from Saab USA? If so, how would I go about getting that?
-is it true that all this can result simply from not using premium gas, and if so, why were there no warning signs?
-is a rebuilt engine recommended? Any advice on purchasing one?
Thanks for help/advice.
