Just wanted to relate a recent observation of mine that may help other owners identify a failing fuel pump before it fails completely.
Ealier this Spring we had a few days with temps in the mid 70 range and I noticed the most severe acceleration lag from a dead stop that I have ever had. Typically I don't notice it until the temp hits 85 degrees or above in my car, and what I was feeling then was much worse than the norm.
My fuel pump died completely on Sunday the 13th and I had it replaced at the Dealership. Ouch! No opportunity for an on-line purchase or trying to find a local parts store with the correct $125 "pump only" in stock which could be re-fitted into the Saab assembly ($530).
We have had unusually hot weather this past week with afternoon commute temperatures in the mid-90's. I typically run premium during the hottest part of the year since it helps significantly to alleviate the acceleration lag problem from a dead stop, but due to the sudden onset of these temps I still have mid-grade fuel in the tank. I expected to encounter acceleration lag but have noticed almost none of it this week.
My guess is that my failing fuel pump was causing slight fuel starvation, which in turn was causing the severe acceleration lag I sufferred at mild temperatures. Other owners of higher mileage cars who are experiencing similar symptoms, may want to consider it an early warning of impending total failure of the fuel pump and plan accordingly.
In hindsight, this acceleration problem was worse last summer than it had been in the previous 6 summers of ownership.
Any one else experience something similar?
