I have a 2000 9-5 wagon, 5 speed, 4 cyl, 120k miles. Up until recently I have been very happy and while there has been repairs, none have felt excessive.
While the AC has never been super cold, last July my AC stopped blowing cold air and my local indie replaced the evaporator core, expansion valve, and O rings, and recharged the system at a cost of about $1400. As much as I can recall last summer it seemed to be OK after that.
Now again it is not working and my indie says that there is a short circuit in the compressor and it is only on intermittently. He said he can track it down but will need to remove the compressor and recharge the system and estimates it will be another 350. He also said I shouldn't expect it to be as cold as when it was new, which makes no sense to me.
My problem is that I am losing confidence and wondering if I should have them do the work, or take it somewhere else. I ma reading that it could be anything from climate control to temp sensors. While I haven't done the reset lately I have not seen any fault codes on the system.
I am looking for advice as to whether the 'short circuit' theory makes sense.
As an aside, I have the classic symptons of the ABS module failure and will also be replacing that, but plan to do it as a DIY project.
Does anyone have advice for Indie mechanic in Newton, MA?
