First, I agree with Mike. Get a handle on the maintenance history. What has or has not been done? A good picture of when (or whether) the following have been replaced or addressed in some fashion will give you an idea of what you may have to address during your period of ownership.

- scheduled preventive maintenance
- sludge
- clutch and/or transmission maintenance/replacement
- fuel pump
- heater control valve
- cabin ventilation fan motor
- struts and shocks
- exhaust system
- catalytic converter
- voltage regulator
- water pump
- PCV upgrade #6
- SID
- directional signal switch assy.
- tires and wheels (the wheels bend after enough pot holes)
- motor mount under the battery
- battery(s)
- front wheel bearings
- constant velocity joints and inner universals
- suspension components and bushings
- DI cassette

I'm not trying to discourage you. The above are all wear items that have a finite life. As an example, if the fuel pump was replaced at 190K miles you probably won't see that as a maintenance need; if it's never been replaced it's just a matter of time (mine just went at 272K miles).

Second, find out from the owner(s) how the car was used. If this car was driven mostly on highways (30K miles/year) or a daily commute of 150 or more miles than this car could be a bargin. As an example, I drove mine 50K miles per year for the first five years...my first front brake job was at 100K miles; it's been 190K miles since my first water pump was replaced.

In conclusion, a car that has been driven 30K-50K miles per year can be a bargain...particularly if the maintenance (AND PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE) has been kept up.
