Sorry to hear that JBro, hope your family didn't get to shaken up by it.
The belt drives the alternator, power steering pump, A/C compressor and water pump. The main thing that could get messed up if the engine was running long after the break is overheating. Extent of damage could be new belt and pulley(s) to damage caused by overheating. The fragmented belt could also cause other damage as it flings about in the engine compartment. I had one break on my old 9000 and nothing major happened.
10k not a lot of miles for the belt or pulleys. I he replaced them all, I would argue a premature failure in one of the two. Tough to say though...
