bad timing for a repair spike.
The codes will indicate which cylinders are misfiring. can you get a list of the codes that they pulled? or take it to autozone and get them? at that point you can replace just the one IDM that is failing, which should save some money right there. better yet, you can prob find a used IDM.
btw prob not a good idea to push your luck with the IDM. if it fails completely there is a good chance that it will ruin the cat. even without total failure, there is chance that enough unburnt gas is being sent out the exhaust to cook the cat. (I think that a flashing check engine light indicates that)
the smoking is probably leaky seals in the turbo, but since the dealer only "thinks" its the turbo might get a second (third by now?) opinion.
