Ok, so as scared as I was of getting code 08 during the hottest days of the summer, I decided to go ahead and replace both driver and passenger stopper arms with aluminum ones as a preventative measure. From my understanding the broken shaft is a secondary failure – after the stopper arm brakes the motor spins the shaft beyond the range of its normal movement, the blender door causes resistance and the shaft brakes because it was not meant to handle stress (that’s why there is stopper arm).
Turns out that I was just in time – driver’s stopper arm was cracked in one place and was waiting to break… I replaced them both (along with a recirculation motor, wasn’t working at all; got used one from my indy for $65 and now all works perfect) with aluminum stopper arms and I’m hoping not to have any more trouble with ACC…
Ok, I do have one question:
- on the driver’s side there was just a stopper arm. However, on the passenger side there was an aluminum rod attached to the stopper arm via a plastic clip on the stopper arm. I tried to move that plastic clip and install it on the new aluminum arm, but it not possible. I did put the metal rod in the hole of a new stopper arm (nothing was holding it in place) and reinstalled the motor on top of it. I tried to wiggle the metal rod a little to see if it will fall of but the clearance between the arm and the motor seems to be too small for it to slip out. Is it ok to leave it like this or should I get back there (please, nooo…) and put something there that will hold it firmly in place?
Thanks for reading. Let me just tell you that I’m sitting tired like hell now, cause the driver side was P!I!T!A!!! No way to get there with a wrench or screwdriver because of the steering wheel!
Just as a curiosity – I was getting code 22 before I replaced the recirculation motor. I haven’t seen it since I replaced the motor. I never got a code 21 or anything else related to recirculation or otherwise. Could it be that a short in recirculation motor was causing ACC to become “corrupt” and throw code 22? The old motor didn’t move when recirculation was on or off, but it did heat up a lot…
Sorry for the long post, and thanks for reading! Oh, and thanks for all the info, couldn’t have done it without you guys! :D
