if there is a problem with the key you will get a message like "Key not accepted" or "key nor recognized"
if there a problem with the theft alarm system you will get "service theft alarm". You will need a tech II to read the specific code that describes the actual problem.
The most common cause of the "service theft alarm" message is the batteries in the module dying. But its wise to get the code before assuming its the batteries.
