Sealed alarm module fix with pics Posted by bobc [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() |
About 5 months ago I started getting "service theft alarm" message on occasion, esp on cold days. I assumed it was the batteries. So about 2 months ago I took out the alarm module to avoid the possibility of the alarm going off randomly. Finally got around to repairing it this weekend.
(btw car is perfectly happy with the unit out. remote works, but you will get the "service theft alarm" message at each start)
As you may have guessed, my '01 Aero had the sealed unit. I decided to go ahead to try and open it and replace the batteries. heres how:
1 - remove the module from inside the left front fender. there are two bolts. peal back the fender liner, and remove the turn signal if you like, it might help. it s up high in the fender.
2 - here is the hard part: open the case. My friend suggested using a pin vise to perforate the case all around , just below the lip of the joint. it worked like a charm. you could use a drill of any sort, but use a real small bit. you can see in the pics that bit was very small.
3 - un-solder the contacts and remove the old batteries. It takes a bit of cutting to free the batteries from the glue that holds them.
4 - solder in the new batteries. My friend did the honors, and it requires some skill to do this well.
5 - Secure the batts in place. I used "goo", a silicone adhesive, I dont know if this was the best choice but its all I had lying around.
6 - drill out the screw holes in the cover. They are clearly marked. This is so that the cover can be screwed back in place.
7 - seal the joint with RTV, and close the case.
8 - screw the case tight.
9 - re-install in the car.
All fixed. hopefully this repair will last.
BTW both bad batteries read ~3.1 volts and both good batteries read ~3.2 volts. I was surprised that .1 volts was enough variation to trigger the warning message.
