2002 was the first year when the 9-5 Aero had sport seats (2003 for ventilated sport seats), Aero-specific trim, and (if you are so inclined) an a/t that allowed the engine to develop full (258 ft. lb.) torque, and with 5 speeds to boot. It is also the first year when stability control was offered (and standard), and the first year for optional Xenon lighting (most Aeros were probably so equipped). All of the above make a compelling case for limiting your search to 2002 models. That said, the difference in reliability among any of the referenced years, by this time is minor. The main peculiarities of individual model years (such as 2001's "worst of the breed" DIC failure rate) have by now been sorted out by the previous owners.
Step one when purchasing any used 9-5 4 cylinder is to eliminate any vehicles that show signs of sludge. Step one after purchasing any 9-5 model 2003 or older is to install the latest PCV update.
Good luck.
