The Secret of 272K miles for those that asked Posted by Herb Hirsch [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() |
First, I didn't do anything magical or special.
The first 250K miles were accumulated over a 5 year period at the rate of 50K miles per year. These miles were mostly Interstate...2-5 hours daily at a typical speed of 70 MPH. Now, retired, I'm driving 10K miles per year with a lot of local driving.
The point made in another post about long runs at optimum operating temperature and light load are probably the secret. One notable example of the effects of this were front pad and rotor replacement intervals of 100K. The third set went on after only 70K miles.
On the 9000 I had before the 9-5 I did the same type of driving AND installed a Hobbs meter (measured hours of operation). My periods of high mileage operation averaged a speed of 55 MPH for all hours of operation...a more normal mix of driving averaged only 25 MPH.
Another effect of the above was on clutch wear. At 205K miles I had to replace the transmission due to a confrontation with a pothole that cracked the transmission case. I replaced the clutch disc and pressure plate at the same time unneccessarily.....the clutch disc was less than half worn. Before the accident I had an expectation of never doing clutch or transmission repairs.
For those of you that read the original post, note that the repairs listed were performed the FIRST and ONLY time within the last 50K miles.
I do my own maintenance. As a strategy I do all preventive maintenance procedures using Saab's guidelines as a minimum. I also replace/repair anything at the first certain sign of failure...particularly if the part cost is below $200. As an example I replaced the temperature sensor ($25) after only 2-3 failure indications...at the other extreme I had to replace the catalytic converter at 160K miles but I waited until I was absolutely certan due to cost (I lucked out and found a low mileage used one for $300) . I'm particularly attentive to lubricants and fluids...change the oil and filter regularly, frequently or often (hint).
I'll be at the SOC in August if anyon wants to talk further.
