Things that should be metal (or sturdy) Posted by Davecl [Email] (#1994) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Davecl) on Wed, 20 Jun 2007 05:48:25 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I love my 2003 Aero, but I just got the fuel line clip recall notice and it got me thinking about how much trouble Saab and Saab owners could avoid if some minor parts were made to be more sturdy. These are the weak plastic parts that probably wouldn't cost much more to make from steel or aluminum, but they cost Saab (or the owner) plenty when they break. I'm going to start a list, which would be useful for anyone considering a used 9-5: these are the cheap parts that could break, so check them first --
Window rollers -- weak green plastic. Not a huge hassle to replace, but why should you have to? And it's a big hassle when they break during the winter or a rain storm....which is inevitable.
HVAC blend arm -- when the plastic one breaks, you either figure out the hacked-together fix with glue and plastic, or have Saab remove your dashboard for about $1500.
Fuel line clip -- plastic, part costs $3, in extreme cases if it breaks the downside is your car catches fire. I bet the cost to Saab of recalling and fixing thousands of cars will be more than they saved by making this part so flimsy.
What else is plastic that should be made of something stronger?
