I avoid the ACDelco PF-53 Oil filters.... Posted by MI-Roger [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: ACDelco PF-53 and PF-53cl Oil filter question, Boomer, Wed, 20 Jun 2007 14:50:03 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
When I first purchased my 9-5 in early 2000 the PF-53 was identical to the Saab filter. It even had that extra crimp in the body which seemed to indicate two separate filtering medias in two compartments. I used many of these filters with my 5,000 mile oil change intervals.
Since then it has changed many times. I have seem it as: (2) nearly identical but without the extra crimp; (3) with a deeply dished top indicating much less internal media; (4) with a very thin top and a pressed in threaded boss for mounting; and (5) most recently it appears to be back to version #2. Do I spend too much time peeking into little blue boxes?
If you still want to use a AC/Delco filter buy the PFL400A. It is sold for use on Ford truck V8's and Chrysler's Turbo 4-cylinder found in the PT Cruiser. It is nearly twice as long as the dimunitive PF53.
I typically buy the Purolator or Purolator Plus version of this filter, although the Motorcraft FL400S is identical and is actually made by Purolator but sells for much less.
There is just something about putting a Ford branded filter on my Saab that makes my skin crawl, I don't know why.
