If it's the lamp that the temperature gauge needle points to when cold, it,s definately the Check Engine lamp. There are about a gazillion things that can trigger this warning from something as simple as a loose gas cap to a number of major problems. Most shops charge a minimum of $40.00 just to hook up a reader to find the trouble(s). I recently purchased a nice hand held OBD2 reader from a CarQuest auto parts store for $99.00 it comes with a manual that lists most common code errors and there is an online recourse covering almost all available codes at http://www.CanOBD2.com. You can also use this tool to reset the lamp. If after a 30 mile drive cycle the lamp stays off it may have been a one time "Burp". The most common problem I see is minor arcing of one of the direct ignition coil pacs. If you lamp comes on in the rain or after going through a car wash this is the most likely problem. You can usually find a good used one on eBay for a reasonable cost. Being an electrical component there is no wear factor, it's either good or bad!
